U-20 World Cup
|
Comp kicks off on Sat in Auckland. NZ v Ukraine
Does it muster any sort of attention in UK?
Should be a treat for we Kiwis. I'm looking forward to it, especially a chance to see Diego Poyet play for Uruguay next week.

Final
Brazil 1-2 Serbia
Pretty good game. Man U's Pereira scored a cracking individual goal to equalise Serbia's opener. Brazil then had the lion's share of possession/chances though not dominant. Serbs hit 'em on the break to go ahead and should have repeated the dose but whichever ic it was through and with only the keeper to beat shot too early.
Anyway, here's a few names that might be worth keeping track of. Obviously we'll hear more of Pereira, but Gabriel De Jesus and Joao Pedro looked very tidy. Would love to see the latter at Upton Park (currently Palmeiras). Of the Serbs I particularly liked Andrija Zivkovic, pacy and creative MF.

Ahh yeah, they're based over at NH Stadium aren't they....forgot about that.
Obviously, the stadium situation in Auckland is pretty buggered as well, so there probably aren't many viable alternatives.
If only they'd built the waterfront stadium for the RWC.

Agreed, but then we can't have the precious darlings of the NZFA having to trundle south for the comp, can we.
I'm aiming to be at Albany by 4 on Weds: savour the delights of the Shore pre-game.

Its ok percy, they'll slap a road toll on all the motorways and will DEFINITELY use the money wisely, to build a better road and public transport network that meets the needs of Aucklanders now and in the future.
I'm certain of it.
I trust Len.

Actually, I coach and play indoor cricket, so weeknights and weekends ARE full, even during the winter.
Rush hour clear by 6.45 percy? Not what I was told about getting to and from NH Stadium.....what a ridiculous location for it.

If only! Worse than London at times, result of building a city on an isthmus with one road in and one road (OK 2 now) out. No problem getting a 10km+ tailback if arriving from the south. And the fuckwits that run this place just keep letting it grow with infill housing and apartments.

''Rush hour in Auckland''
What must that be like? 5 cars, a truck and a bus?

watched a couple of interesting games ...
Brazil...Portugal should have won it on chances created..
Serbia had more chances US GK saved them....
All these young lads have problems scoring...not enough strikes on target...
3 good games to go...''Any team can win it...

QFs
Portugal 0-0 Brazil (aet Brazil win 3-1 on pens)
Went to this. Good game despite the score. Portugal should have won by 5 or 6. They had 7 gold-plated chances and failed to even test the keeper. They maintained this woeful finishing in the penalties, converting only one shooting wide on 3 and chipping the other sofftly into the keeper's arms. The final attempt actually went out of the stadium! Brazil created no clear cut chances. Very glad I've backed Mali to win the tournament.
Germany 1-1 Mali (aet, Mali win 4-3 on pens)
Uzbekistan 0-1 Senegal
USA 0-0 Serbia (aet, Serbia win 6-5 after 9 pens apiece)
Semi Finals (Weds NZ Time):
Senegal v Brazil (Christchurch) Mali v Serbia (Auckland, I'll be there)

Was a shame for the Kiwi kids percy...they played pretty well last night, and like you, I thought they'd get stuffed.
Took a cracking goal to win it in the end though, so no shame.
As for the crowds, I have to be honest, I'm not overly surprised. Football hardly ever gets big crowds here....with the exception of the Bahrain WC playoff, I can't remember the last time I saw a massive crowd at a game in NZ.
We just don't go out and watch football in great numbers.

I watched the game on a stream (constantly interrupted by a plumber fixing a water leak for me) to see how Poyet did. He is definitely a quality well-disciplined defensive midfield player. Yes Uruguay defended most of the game but Brazil really struggled against them. Few of Brazil's 35 shots were on target or troubled the keeper.
How did SA keep ignoring the lad...?

Completion of round of 16
Austria 0-2 Uzbekistan Germany 1-0 Nigeria Brazil 0-0 Urguay (aet, Brazil win 5-4 on pens) NZ 1-2 Portugal
Stats read like Brazil murdered Uruguay - 66% possession and 35 shots!
I went to NZ-Portugal game and fully expected Port to win by 3 to 5 goals. Cracking game, NZ played way above their level but in the end the two midfield craftsmen Rony Lopes and Gelson Martins were just too classy. Absolutely crap turnout - 10,500: NZ should be ashamed at this poor support.
Quarter Finals then: Portugal v Brazil (I'll be there) Mali v Germany (my money - literally - is on Mali) USA v Serbia Senegal v Uzbekistan

Sounds like you've enjoyed it mate, and had some decent games. I haven't gone to any myself....really don't fancy fighting my way across Auckland in rush hour to get to the night games, and weekends are pretty full unfortunately.

Was a great opportunity for me when it was held in my home city in 2007.
I saw people like di Maria, Aguero, and Pique for the first time.
Latin American fans put us all to shame as far as atmosphere goes.
Enjoy yours.

Hi Jonah.
Overall pretty good, though maybe not quite as good as hoped. Having watched the U17s back in '99 - which was brilliant - I'd hoped for the same, but plainly the coaching has kicked in rather more than with the younger age group, so rather tentative at times. Nevertheless Brazil v Nigeria was outstanding. Portugal look very solid. Mali really outplayed Uruguay yesterday so the Ghana v Mali game should be interesting. Seems we've fluked a couple of good games in Hamilton as Portugal will play Kiwis on Thursday (we haven't the faintest hope) and assuming form holds a Brazil v Portugal QF on Sunday. Haven't seen Germans in the flesh, but they've scored heaps. You'd have to fancy a Germany-Brazil final, but it's football, so ???
Have you been/are you going to any games?
